David Black, PHD
Founder, CEO - Aegis Sciences Corporation
Earned his undergraduate degree from Loyola College in Baltimore and doctorate degree in Legal Medicine (Forensic Toxicology) from the University of Maryland at Baltimore (1982). Dr. Black is a Diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (DABFT), Diplomat of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (DABCC), and is a Certified Professional Chemist by the American Institute of Chemists (CPC/AIC). Dr. Black was Toxicology Department Head and Director of Toxicology for Maryland Medical Laboratory, Inc. from 1982-1986. He joined Vanderbilt University in 1986 as Assistant Professor with appointments on Pathology and Pharmacology. In 1990 Dr. Black founded Aegis Sciences Corporation where he serves as Chairman, President and Laboratory Director. Aegis is a forensic chemical and drug-testing laboratory specializing in Zero-Tolerance Drug Testing (proprietary process), employee drug testing, professional and amateur athlete drug testing and post-mortem evaluations. Dr. Black served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam prior to attending college. Personal interests include church and community activities, Rotary International (Past President of Hendersonville Rotary Club), and medical missions to Guatemala. Dr. Black lives in Gallatin, TN with his wife Diane and has three adult children and two grandchildren.
Doug Calland MS, ATC
Doug Calland is the supervisor of the Woody Hayes AT Facility and the Head Football Athletic Trainer at Ohio State. He joined the OSU Staff in 1995 after serving as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Washington. He is a member of the NATA's Honors and Awards Committee.
A member of the Ohio State athletic training staff since 1995, serves as co-head trainer for the Buckeyes and is in charge of overseeing the football program and all aspects of athletic training in the Woody Hayes Athletics Center. Calland is from Columbus and is a graduate of Whetstone High School. He graduated from Ohio State in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. As an undergraduate, he spent four years on the training staff working with a variety of sports, including football.
Prior to his graduation from OSU, Calland served as the head trainer for the Pittsburgh Pirates Rookie League team in Bradenton, Fla. Following his graduation from Ohio State, Calland was a graduate assistant trainer for two years at Oklahoma State University. While there, he worked with the wrestling program and assisted with football. He earned his master's degree in educational administration from Oklahoma State in 1983. Immediately after graduation, Calland went to work at the University of Washington as an assistant trainer, working primarily with football and men's basketball. In 1994, he was promoted to assistant head trainer. While he was at Washington, the Huskies played in three Rose Bowls and captured the 1991 national championship.
Calland returned to Ohio State in 1995 to work with the football team. He has had oversight of the football program since 2000 and was named to his present position of Co-Head Trainer in 2005. Calland is a member National Athletic Trainers Association and the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association. He serves on the NATA's National Awards and Honors Committee.
In addition to his duties with Athletics, Calland is a clinical course instructor in Ohio State's school of Allied Medical Professions. Doug and his wife, Natalie, who works in the Ohio State Business Office and coordinates travel for many of the Buckeye teams, including football, have two sons, Brandon and Ryan, and a daughter, Alyssa.
Pat Cawley, D.Sc., OPA, RT, CCRC

Earned his B.S. in Health Physics from the University of Oklahoma. After graduation in 1969, he joined the United States Navy and served for 61/2 years as an independent duty hospital corpsman with the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade. Upon discharge from the Navy in 1975, Dr. Cawley became Chief Technologist for interventional and special procedures radiology at Norman Regional Medical Center in Norman Oklahoma while completing a Master's Degree in radiation oncology. While in this position, Dr. Cawley was also an adjunct professor of radiologic technology at the Oscar Rose College school of Radiologic Technology. In 1980, Dr. Cawley assumed the position of Director of the San Diego Body Mechanics Laboratory in San Diego. In 1985, Dr. Cawley assumed the post as Director of Research at Smith & Nephew DonJoy as well as Director and Senior Scientist of the DonJoy Body Mechanics laboratory. During this period, Dr. Cawley completed his Doctor of Science degree at St. George University in Oxford, England. As 1998, Dr. Cawley assumed the position of Vice President of Research at Breg, Inc., a position he still holds today. Dr. Cawley's principal research interests are conservative management strategies for symptomatic osteoarthritis in the lower extremity and non-narcotic postoperative pain management. Dr. Cawley is a Certified Orthopedic Physician's Assistant, a Certified Radiologic Technologist, and a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator.
Ellen Coleman, RD, MA, MPH
Is a registered dietitian and exercise physiologist in Riverside, California. She is the nutrition consultant for The SPORT Clinic and has consulted with the Los Angeles Lakers Basketball team and Anaheim Angels baseball team. Ellen is the author of two books Ultimate Sport Nutrition 2nd ed. (co-author, 2000) and Eating for Endurance, 3rd ed. (1997). She has also authored three continuing education courses (Nutrition Dimension) for health professionals - Diet, Exercise, and Fitness, 5th ed. (2002), Cardiovascular Nutrition and Fitness, 4th ed. (2001), and Nation al Quackery, 3rd ed. (2001). She is the nutrition columnist for Sport Medicine Digest and lectures extensively on the dietary needs of athletes and active people.
She has completed numerous marathons and 200 mile bicycle races and is a two time finisher of the Hawaii Ironman triathlon. Ellen is a member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition Practice Group (SCAN) of the ADA, and the American College of Sports Medicine. She received the 1994 SCAN achievement award and a 1995 California Dietetic Association award for excellence in private practice.

Adam Nevala, 32, rejoins the Angels Major League Athletic Training Staff for his fourth year after working in the team’s minor league system for 7 seasons. Nevala served as the head athletic trainer in AAA Salt Lake City where he spent 2 seasons (2003-2004). Prior to that, he was the head athletic trainer for AA Arkansas (2002), Rancho Cucamonga (2001), Lake Elsinore (2000), Cedar Rapids (1999), and assistant athletic trainer/clubhouse manager in Butte (1998). In 2002 (Detroit), 2003 (Phoenix), and 2006 (Atlanta), Adam was a presenter at the PBATS annual team medicine conference. A native of Minnesota, Nevala received his undergraduate degree from Arizona State University and his master’s degree from the University of California Pennsylvania. Adam spends his off-seasons in Irvine, CA with his wife Tina.
Robert D. Kersey, PhD, ATC, CSCS

A Professor of Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton. Before coming to Cal State Fullerton in 1997, he was an Associate Professor in Human Performance at San Jose State University. Dr. Kersey received his doctoral degree from the University of New Mexico. His dissertation topic involved the incidence of anabolic-androgenic steroids use among community college student-athletes. He was a practicing athletic trainer at Hartnell College (82 – 95), in addition to various other institutions. Dr. Kersey is currently the Director for Cal State Fullerton’s nationally accredited (CAAHEP) undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program. He serves his profession as a reviewer for the Journal of Athletic Training, in addition to being a manuscript reviewer and the Book Review Editor for Athletic Therapy Today. He currently is on the writing committee for a Position Statement on Team Physicians for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Additionally, he is the chair for the Position Statement on Anabolic Steroids for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Jeff Konin, PhD, ATC, PT
Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, College of Medicine, where he also serves as the Executive Director for the Sports Medicine & Athletic Related Trauma (SMART) Institute, a component of USF Health.
Earned a PhD degree in physical therapy from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and a master’s degree in physical therapy from the University of Delaware. He holds a master’s degree in education specializing in athletic training and sports medicine from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and bachelor’s degree in health & physical education from Eastern Connecticut State University.
Prior to joining USF Health, Dr. Konin was a tenured associate professor and the Director of Sports Medicine at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Dr. Konin’s research focuses on preventing, assessing and managing injuries sustained by children playing sports. He currently serves as the founder and director of The National Center for Youth Sport Injury, a center devoted to educating health care providers, parents, coaches, and the media on the etiology, prevention, and management of children’s sports-related injuries. Dr. Konin’s written textbooks have included Clinical Athletic Training, Special Tests for Orthopedic Examination (3 editions, translations in Spanish & Korean), Practical Kinesiology for the Physical Therapist Assistant (translation in Portuguese), Reimbursement for Athletic Trainers, and Documentation for Athletic Training and Behind the Scenes as a Team Physician. He has also served as the series editor for CD-ROM’s titled Goniometry, Gait Analysis, and Manual Muscle Testing.

Dan Newman is beginning his 6th year as the Head Athletic Trainer with the Union Redskins. In a partnership with the Southcrest Wellness and Sports Medicine Center, Dan oversees a staff of twelve students and one University of Tulsa athletic training student intern.
Dan graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1996 with a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training. Dan furthered his education by receiving his Master’s of Kinesiology (with an emphasis in Sports Injury management) from the University of Nevada- Las Vegas. Dan’s professional experience encompasses over 11 years at the NCAA division I level, to small college and high school settings. Before joining the staff at Union, Dan oversaw the Sports Medicine Dept at Friends University.
Throughout his career, Dan has volunteered to be a part of the yearly medical staff that serves the State Special Olympic Games. Dan has also been the Meeting Committee Chairman for the Oklahoma Athletic Training Association for the past several years, and sits on various other committees throughout the states athletic training organization.
Dan and his wife Becky have two daughters, Peyton (6) and Addison (1).

James Syms, PT, DSc, ATC, SCS, CSCS
Board Certified Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy – American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Certified Athletic Trainer - National Athletic Trainers Association. Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist – National Strength and Conditioning Association. James is a 1987 honors graduate of the California State University at Northridge with a Bachelors of Science degree in Health Science-Physical Therapy Option. In the same year, Dr. Syms received his Certificate in Physical Therapy from the UCLA Medical Center/CSUN Physical Therapy Professional Program. He obtained his Advanced Masters degree in Physical Therapy from Loma Linda University in 1995. He received his Doctor of Science degree from Loma Linda University in 2005. He has been instructing in entry-level physical therapist and physical therapist assistant education for seventeen years, currently holding a full time appointment as an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy at Loma Linda University in the School of Allied Health Professions where Dr. Syms has served as the Clinical Sciences and the Orthopaedic Tract Curriculum Coordinator. He also holds a position of Adjunct Faculty in the School of Behavioral and Applied Sciences at Azusa Pacific University. At Azusa Pacific University, Dr. Syms is an instructor of Kinesiology and Biomechanics and Sports Physical Therapy, and is the coordinator of the Sports Physical Therapy residency program. Academic and clinical research interests include articular and soft tissue biomechanics, arthrokinematic events of the upper extremity with emphasis on the shoulder/shoulder girdle complex in the overhead throwing athlete; and the integration of psychomotor and the cognitive processes of the neurophysiological basis of movement. He has studied and taught at the national and international levels the various manual therapy techniques incorporating Australian, Norwegian, and Osteopathic techniques into his extensive clinical background to provide a broad-based understanding of manual therapy technique application. He combines these manual therapy techniques with the principles of motor skill acquisition for optimal function outcomes. Dr. Syms has been certified as a strength and conditioning specialist by the NSCA since 1992, received his NATA certificate in athletic training in 1993, and has been a board certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy since 1994. Dr. Syms has served the physical therapy profession at the national, state and local levels. At the national level is a member of the APTA Government Affairs Committee. At the state level, he has represented the California Chapter as a delegate to the APTA House of Delegates for eight years. He is in his eighth year as a member of the CPTA Government Affairs Committee, serving as the Committee Chair for three years. In 2005 he was elected to the position of Director on the CPTA Board, and re-elected in 2007. He has held elected office in the Inland Counties District as Chair in 2000, Secretary in 2002, a representative to the Assembly of Representative from 2000-2004, and the District’s Chief Representative during 2005-06.
